...progressively worsenening over 20K Mi.? It now has 185,000 and I'm ready to pull apart the rear end.
What am I looking for? Please help me trouble shoot and what specialty tools will I need?
Thanks in advance for your input and help !!!

take it to a qualified mechanic,at an established shop.
it's more economical in the long run

look for teeth off the ring gear and the clearance between the ring gear and side gears.

Does the noise get louder when you step on rthe gas pedal? If so then have the mufler and its pipes checked for defects such as holes. Also maybe a clamp has come loose and the exhaust pipes are banging.

Axle bearings if it is coming from the ends of the housing.
Carrier bearings if it sound like the middle and the axles have a lot of play. Pinion bearings if it growls when you get on the gas or let off.
If it is a whine it will be your gears.
As far as tools, an impact wrench with large socket to pull the yoke off the pinion.
A dial indicator and base to measure back lash
Calipers to measure shims
Catch can to hold the oil
torque wrench in inch pounds to measure pre load
other than that, a socket set.
