1993 Toyota corolla 100 a fuse has burnt out twice already. What could be the problem?

Ok, my battery died because the lights were left on and I got a new battery to put in. After hooking up the new battery the car was totally dead not even dimmed lights. After look around I noticed the 100 a fuse in the fuse box near the engine was burnt out. After taking a while to figure out how to take that fuse out (finally realized that it was bolted in) I purchase a replacement fuse, put it back and started to connect the battery. When putting the terminal on there were a few sparks then I heard the fuse blow. What else could be wrong and how could this be fixed? The car was working perfectly before the lights drained the battery. Thanks.
