1993 mercury grand maquis instrument cluster inacurate readings ...?

Ok here's the issue that I'm having ... I recently changed the heater core in my car out... Before disconnecting the instrument cluster and other components my distance to empty on digital dash reading is inacurate ... It may show that I have a full tank but is not right ... What may be the issue .. Any help ?? Thanks
