The car starts, but it will stumble and die and then it will run fine for a few seconds, maybe a minute, then stumble like it wants to die, sometimes it will, sometimes it might smooth back out.

When it stumbles, then check engine light comes on, and (I'm not sure if it related), but the cooling fans some on as well.

I'm gonna try to pull codes today, but I need some direction here if the codes don't give any help.

I thought it might be a pluged up cat, but with it smoothing out, it kinda makes me think its not.

Just need some advice, thoughts, Ideas and maybe a direction to go.

Get the codes pulled and see what it says. Your onboard diagnostics system is designed to help in this area. Not sure if the vehicle is OBD I or not given the year. If it's OBD II, pulling the codes would be very easy. In any event see what codes it is throwing. It could be a whole lot of things...

Vacuum leak
clogged Idle Air Control
EGR Valve Plugged
throttle position sensor
faulty ignition system (plugs, wires, distributor, etc)
plugged fuel filter
failing fuel pump

Well, this could be a number of things. Check the Plugs, Ignition Wires, Distributor Cap, and if you think it's the cat thats plugged up, run a pressure test on the exhaust system. this may help you figure out if that's it.

As for the check engine light, that could indicate that it is the cat because there are Heated O2 sensors down there that would trip if the Converter is not doing it's job.

I think the Cat is a good guess.
