I have a 93 prelude and it has about 160k on it. I've had problems with the front end but i got ball joints replaced and that took care of the problem. Now the car has a new problem. This car is an AUTOMATIC transmission. The reason i believe that it's a transmission or axle issue is because the shaking starts only when accelerating. Here are the exact symptoms of the shaking/banging:
-happens on and off, not all the time but most of the time.
-has been getting slightly worse over time.
-gets worse at higher speeds until over 80mph+
-gets worse at higher rpms. really bad around 3000-4000 rpms.
-doesn't shake if at a stop or when hitting the gas in neutral.
Additional information:
-Transmission fluid is fine.
-Problem doesn't seem to get worse when turning.
-Braking also causes the car to shake a bit, but i believe this problem is unrelated (pads and rotors).
I'm almost positive that this is not a suspension issue. I've been told it could be one of several issues like motor mounts, broken axle, transmission slip, vacuum leak.. really a variety of possibilities. but given my specific symptoms, i think someone should be able to figure it out. Please give me any suggestions on what to get checked out.
