1993 Buick Century Automatic Transmission Leak?

Hello People,
The car has about 140,000 miles on it. Just recently we took the car to the local dealer for an oil change, where it was pointed out that the cork seal for the sump was leaking. The transmission shifts properly and the fluid level is still OK. The dealer wants about $270 (which we don't have anyway) to change the seal, fluid and filter.

My concern is that the fluid may be the only thing that's holding the transmission intact. As usual, we can't afford another car right now. She can't drive mine (it's a stick and I've tried and she can't or, she'll kill my clutch) so I'm planning to watch the fluid level and add as necessary. So far, so good but, eventually this isn't going to work (or the environment is really going to suffer) and, right now, we still need her car.

I *may* have a fluid transfer pump that's long enough to siphon the fluid (and stuff) out and replace it. It depends on much tubing I have and what's needed. Does anyone know how much pressure is in the sump under normal operation? Is it possible to, say, duct tape the leaking gasket or is there too much pressure for that to work? Any ideas on how to save situation for awhile?
Thanx in advance
