1992 Honda VT1100C intermittent starting problem - Battery?

The bike was not starting at all and wouldn't turn over most of the time, but sometimes would. I put in a new battery and had the same problem, so I took it to the shop and they replaced the regulator/rectifier. Now the bike has been starting fine until today when it didn't start on the first try. I tried again and then the same slow turning over / dead battery feeling. I turned off the ignition then waited a few seconds, turned back on the ignition then it started right away. I'm concerned that something else may be going on, and I have a big trip coming up at the end of the month. I don't want to get stranded. Any ideas? - Thanks

Starter button... Not only does it start you bike, but it directly energizes your headlight (headlight goes off when you hit the start button). Over time, the contacts in the button wear and can create an issue for starting the bike, or your headlight could quit working.

I wouldn't hesitate to take the bike on the trip, just find your starter relay so that you can jump it just in case. The first place I would look is underneath the left side cover. Follow the positive battery cable to the relay. You will see 2 larger posts that should be covered with a slip cover on the cables. Pull the covers back and jump across those terminals if your starter button quits working. MAKE SURE THE BIKE IS IN NEUTRAL! You can use a leatherman, pocket knife, or a piece of heavy gauge wire to get the bike started in a jam.
