1991 Mercury GM not shifting out of first gear?

The car will shift through P, R, and will go into drive, but will not shift out of first gear. The Trans fluid seems to be just fine, no burning. The car will also stall sometimes when idle. I do not see any damaged hoses in the engine compartment. Your help is appricated. Thanks.
 
Sounds like a transmission problem maybe one of the clutch packs in the tranny is gone or the stator in the torque converter (the part of the tranny that allows free spinning, like the clutch in a standard) is gone. It sounds like it is time to take it to the mechanics. Sorry dude, but I think its time to trade in the old girl or get a new transmission.
