i have a 1991 ford f150 it has a 302 and its automatic...truck sits there and cranks but wont start and its getting fire and gas and air...i have been told to put a timing chain on it but then i was told if it has good compression it cant be the timining chain is this true? thanks

You need to check TDC to check timing.Pull the the #1 plug and bring the piston up to the top and just about where it starts going back down, check your timing notch on the harmonic balancer should be real close to zero, then pull the distributor cap off and see if the rotor is pointing toward the number 1 spark plug if the the notch is at zero and the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug then your timing is on.As long as your timing chain is connected you will have compression regardless if it out of time.
It's easier if you hand crank the engine to bring the piston to TDC
