1991 ford ranger problem?

I have intermittent problems with my ranger (4cyl.) At times it idles very rough, rpms drop, and loses power. On a steep incline, power drops to the point where you may not be able to make the hill. Fuel odor outside of truck during this time. Problem seems to get worse as fuel tank get low. I've taken this to the ford dealership and another mechanic , but neither one can find the problem. Driving me crazy!

With that many miles you are probably looking at a faulty fuel pump.
You can try changing the fuel filter first and see if that helps.
Otherwise, have the fuel pressure tested and make sure it's within spec. if not, there's a solid chance that's the problem.
