1991 Ford Econovan: Cigarette lighter outlet powers the lighter but won't

power GPS/Phone? Why? I have a 1991 Ford Econovan camper conversion. The 12V cigarette lighter outlet powers the actual lighter which works fine but when I plug in my Garmin GPS or my iTrip nothing. Why is this. What would it take to fix??
