1991 Dodge Dakota Exaust?

I have an 04 F150 with a 4.6 Liter V8 and I cut the muffler off and put a turn down tip on it. It sounds really good..the idle isn't too loud but you can hear it when you accelerate. Going down the highway I have less drone than I did with my Flowmaster 40 series.
 
Got a 5.2 V8 with stock exaust on it. I want to do something muffler wise, but im not sure. Im pretty much broke so heres my options.

1. Glasspack
or
2. Cut muffler off and run just the cat and pipe

for #2 is that what open exaust is? and does it hurt gas mileage or the truck in anyway?

and its a single that sticks out the side. stock is gay. wish it had dual.
