Okay so I'm asking this question for my husband since he is at work, but his truck has broken down 2 times now. He said that the temp is always fine, but the first time it happened he had no coolant. and it made a gurgling sound when it was just about to die and when he would try to start it. he said this time the reserve still had coolent in it, but the hose was hot as hell. any ideas what could be wrong with it.
he was driving the truck both times it died. no smoke ever came out. the first time it died, he restarted it in about 10 minutes, but this time, no luck so far.

The cooling system will suck coolant from the reserve tank when the engine cools, and will push coolant to the reserve tank when the engine is hot (from the pressure created).

The radiator hose is going to be hot, remember the engine is operating at a temperature between 180-210*F, so it will be hot to the touch.

From your description, I come up with a stumble of the motor... I would look in to fuel delivery issues. Could be lack of fuel, or too much fuel... Or it may not be fuel problem at all.

Need better description. Was truck idleing, going down highway, full operating temp, did it blow any color of smoke when it stalled, any smoke when you restart????
