Hello everyone, my issue right now is that I have borrowed my fathers car for the last 2 weeks. Has driven fine. This morning I felt a slight rumble while parked. Put it in drive and went to work. I arrived at work and put the car in park and this type of toyota has a parking brake which is rectagular and black and has a little button on the back which you push and then turn the parking brake and it pulls out. I did that and the darn thing pulled out more than ever and now the BRAKE light is on and wont go away when i put the parking brake on. When I pull the parking brake in and out it moves freely as if its not grabbing anything. I am ow frustrated because my father is going to blame me for this. Does anyone have any idea what could have caused this and what kind of repairs would need to be made? I know its a 20 year old truck, but it only has 140Kmiles. My father has kept it looking and running well. Im sure there are certain things that can be attributed to its old age. Thanks for any info

Because it's an automatic, the parking brake never gets used. When you pulled it to set it, all the rusty parts including the cables seized up. The brake stays on when you release the handle. You can try grabbing the rubber housings on the brake cable about one foot from the rear brake drum and shake it up, down, left and right and you might get lucky. If you bang on the backing plate it may also help, the lever that the cable attaches to on the brake shoe rusts and does not return.
Mechanics all know not to use the emergency brake on an automatic car.
