1990 Mazda RX7 overheating?

My brother gave me his rx7 because he had to go to california and now i cant even use the car because it overheats and then i have to turn it off and wait till it gets cold again so that the engine starts again. Im guessing its a compression problem but i dont knowyet and i wanna see if theres someone out there that has had this problem before. anything will help at this moment.
 
well the first thing is to check the thermostat and then the water pump i have a 93 mx6 with the same problem and it ended up being the water pump.hope this helps
