1990 Dodge Dakota 4x4 Question! PLZ Help!?

Hello,

I have a 90 4x4 5-Speed dakota that wont go into 4wd after i took it out, The 4x4 works great when it works, and also it dont idle. I know that these dakotas have vacuum locking differentials, can this be a vacuum leak??
