I have a 1990 Buick Riviera 3.8L engine. When i turned on the car, while it was on park, the car was going in reverse. When i put it on drive, its still going in a reverse motion. After i turned it off, it never turned on again but when the switch is on, i see the reverse lights on. One guy told me it was transmission problems and the other guy told me it was a linkage problem. Can anyone tell me what the cause of this? 10 pts and 5 stars.

You need to get that car to a transmission shop. It was designed only to start in park. It is not supposed to start in any other gear. Nor is it supposed to go in a reverse motion, while the car is in park. As far as putting it in drive, and still going in reverse, it sounds to me like a linkage problem you are having. It could also be in the transmission, itself, as well. The automatic transmission is actually a very complacated affair, indeed. There are many valves, solinoids, and other stuff, that can and will go wrong. The automatic transmission is, for the most part, out of the scope of the home mechanic. Your best bet would be to take it to a transmission shop, where they have the tools and the know how to do the job right.

linkage problem is same thing as trans problem if it started in gear and didnt metter which way you move shifter then shifter not working and who knows
