1988 Honda Accord engine/ electrical issues?

I have a 88 accord and the car will run fine when the engine is cold. once i let it warm up and i drive it somewhere, the rpm gauge will start to bounce or jump around between 2,000 and 5,000 rpms. the engine will then rev up and stay around 3500 or 4000 rpms. eventually the engine will die and it won't start back up until it has cooled off a bit.

im thinking the issue is electrical rather than mechanical. i've changed the distributor but have not had a chance to change the coil. however, i know that the coil plays a role in regulating the rpms.

any suggestions?
