1988 g20 chevy van alternater clip is broke?

ive just noticed my alternater plug"clip" is broke an drained my bat so i got a new battery 1000 titan cold cranking (99(dollers my qestion is my friend from corvellies from home tied the clip down so it will not move cheap fix cause advanesed dont have new plug in stock,the q is wye does it seem to be going down or is it me cause it reads from 8///-///18 its above half two //after half but when i put lights radieo an mosly when braking it jumps to 1 below half "/" before he tyed it down an had new battery installed they did test an said new alternater was installed resently but has a ripple with plug just in the plug not clipped until friend tyed it down wye is the battery gauge dropping when i hit the brakes an lights but does go back up after i shut them off,dont drive it much just want to make shore its not just running of the battery again got the van for church to help people that dont have rides,great shape van 68 areiganl mile thousend that is thanks in advance for any info have a great day
 
It's a possibility the alternator isn't the right amp alternator for the van. In other words if the van needs a 110 amp alternator and a 80 amp was installed then it is not keeping up with it's needs. That will cause a low reading. Also the plug could be making only limited contact and that could also cause the low reading. My suggestion is to remove the alternator and have it checked at the local auto parts store. Also check to see that it is at least 100 amps, and replace that plug and you should be ok. GOOD LUCK!!!
