1987 Mazda B2200 won't start?

My 1987 Mazda B2200 pickup won't start. It has a 4 cylinder engine with a carburetor. I am getting spark to the plugs, but did notice the plugs were soaked with fuel after only a few seconds of cranking. Removed the plugs, cranked the engine until the cylinders were dry then installed new spark plugs. Just to rule out problems with the carburetor and fuel pump, I disconnected the fuel line coming from the gas tank. Sprayed a short burst of starting fluid into the carburetor and cranked the engine some more...still won't start. This is so annoying! My friend has the same M/M/Y truck as mine that runs, and we've tried swapping out coil, distributor, and even the computers. This friggin truck just doesn't want to start! What am I over-looking?
Yes I did check the timing, all marks are spot on and rotor button is pointing to the correct plug wire. As to checking the float, shouldn't the engine show signs of life when using the starting fluid?
fordtech, I haven't checked compression yet other than holding my finger over the spark plug hole. I'm going to borrow my uncle's compression tester in the morning, and will post results on here.
