1987 chevy s10 2.8 ltr engine, acceleration spudders?

ok i have a 1987 chevy s10 blazer, 2.8 ltr engine, just had a major tune up , new plugs and wires, cap rotor, ect.
today i was driving and when i get around 30 mph and give it more gas it starts spuddering and wont go any faster, you can tell it wants to but it wont.
here and there iv noticed a slight backfire coming from engine compartment area.
at first i thought it could be the fuel filter, but after i told someone my check engine light came on for a brief second or two, they said a fuel filter wouldnt cause the check engine light to come on.
any suggestions ?
 
Well I'd check the fuel filter anyway and also check the plugs. Ive bought brand new plugs that were bad. If you can smell gas its probably the plugs. But the backfiring means it could be off time. Any of these would be my guess.
