my ignition went out 1985 cadillac deville and i was wondering how to get to the purple and red wire that goes to the starter and constant as put in this

it does not screw off and the bottom pops off!!!
its like a soda can with the 2 ends open.
i was wondering how do i get the steering column off??
do i have to take off the WHOLE steering wheel to get t o 2 wires or can i go where the fire wall is and then get it from there??
if either way how do i do it?? people only PLEASE that know what they are talking about. no "look in the manual" people.
tell me how. i have the thick manual from advanced auto parts to so can anyone piggy back off that.
