1985 buick regal 3.8l nonturbo v6, where to start for horsepower?

have this car, and just decided to add horsepower, but I have no idea, on where to start. I'm aware of some parts like carburetors, etc. but I don't know when that step occurs. so can someone tell me a few things to do so that I have a starting point? I know u could say just start with different engine. but I'm not trying to get outrageous "YET" just a nice taste of horsepower , FOR NOW
