1984 Toyota Tercel mechanical fuel pump question?

I took the supply fuel line off that supplys fuel to the carb - its sending fuel. I have inspected lines going to the carb, they are clear. Carb, still seems to not be getting enough fuel. When I start the car, it stumbles and sputters and I have to keep pumping the gas to keep it running.. My Q: Could fuel pump stiil be shot? I'm thinking its not sending enough fuel to carb. When I give it gas standing over the carb and looking down into carb I see the gas squirt into carb. At idle should gas be squirting into carb? Should I see constant flow of gas into carb at idle? Thanks
 
It's kind of hard to see the gas being sucked into the carb by the venturi effect. What you see is the accelerator pump shooting in a squirt of gas when you open the throttle.

You could have a vacuum leak, and this would cause rough idling as well.

Have you checked all the hoses for any leaks? I hate to say this again, but the car is 25 years old, and rubber doesn't last forever.
 
well its not the pump if your getting fuel its working could be fuel filter or the pump on side of carb it wil lget gas all the time but you shoul d see it more if your pumping it. many cars have a pump on side of carb either mechanical or eletric since you have to pump it to keep it going id say either fuel filter or try looking back again at what moves on carb while your pumping carburetor diaphram not sure about name it wil be a small square thing on side of carb or a small round thing both wil lhave a pumping action wish i could think of name but might fin dit in one of these links i found in toyota fourms
 
Check your float level and the electronic "check valve" it sounds more like a carb problem than a fuel supply problem.
 
It could very well be your fuel pump that is shot. The fuel pump may work somewhat as in your case the fuel pump isn't delivering enough fuel to the carb which in turn causes the stumbling and sputtering and having to keep pumping the gas pedal to keep it running. Also you may want to check your carb... You may have a bad float... If the float is bad you would have a condition that would flood the carb also causing the same engine problems you are having. It also may be the carb itself. That is another possibility as well. Also check your fuel filter... That may be plugged as well. Yes you should see gas squirting into the carb during idle. Yes you should see a constant flow of gas into the carb. You can perform a test to see if your fuel pump is shot... Just take a gas can and fill it then take the gas line off at the carb and then take a piece of steel gas line and attach a fitting to the end so you can screw it into your carb (in place of the origional line). Now attach a piece of rubber gas hose onto the end that you have screwed into the carb then place the other end of the rubber gas hose into the gas can. You may have to hold the gas can up in the air so just take anything that will hold the gas can up in the air. Once you have the engine running and if it now runs with no problems then you'll know for sure that it is the fuel pump cause you have bypassed it by using a gas can directly to the carb. If by doing this the engine still runs poorly then you'll probably need to either replace the carb or have it cleaned or rebuilt. The only other thing you could try is to inspect your fuel lines that travel to the rear of the vehicle and note any leakes (if any). Also you may want to check the gas tank vent line as well as any other lines and rubber hoses while you are at it.
