1983 yamaha virago 920. should i replace rotor and starter idler gear?

starting gears were not put in right and they ground 1/16" off one side of the rotor. i took it off and took a grinder to it, even filed between the teeth.I made it smooth so that they would engage properly.
the starter idler gear looks fine no wear but the gasket rubber thing is worn off. I started up the bike and it has the usual virago starting problem. the rotor i can pick up for $200 and idler gear for $150. but that's expensive and wondering if what i have now can get me by while still having a reliable starting machine
