1983 Honda VT500 Ascot (Parts)?

I'm a little new the motorcycle scene and want to know how specific parts need to be for the bike you drive. I have a 1983 Honda VT500 Ascot, and I want to change the light (from the square looking stock to a more round cafe style one)... also the seat.

What do I need to know about modifying bikes?
