1983 Honda Shadow 750 Rebuild?

My friend recently purchased a 1983 Honda Shadow 750 and we began to rebuild it. we got it to fire and run on carb and choke cleaner, but it wont run on its own gas, so I am going to have to rebuild the carbs, but I also noticed that there was no fuel coming out of the fuel line toward the carbs. I know this bike features a electric fuel pump and I would really like not to replace it. Is there anything I need to know about it that would help me get the fuel system working?
 
When you turn on the key, you should hear the fuel pump clicking for a few seconds.
Is the petcock in the "on" position - the petcock is not connected to the fuel tank - it is located under the seat, on the right side of the bike.
