my 81 chevy 4x4 front driverside axle started grinding when I turned in 4 wheel, about a year ago. It's not a problem when it's in 2 wheel, and it recently got so bad that it happens all the time in 4 wheel, and the truck wont go in the snow like it used to. I checked the hub, its fine, but the c clip wont go on, the groove is too far in. could it be a replacement axle from the wrong year? a bad wheel bearing problem im not seeing? the hub is fine. I just can't get the c clip to fasten, and I don't believe that I can, the hub is 1 3/4" and the groove is only 1" from the wheel bearing.
