1979 Chevy impala 5.0 305 8cyl transmission problem!?

my 1979 5.0 305 8cyl impala wont drive forward when its on drive and wont backup when its on reverse. when i looked under the car, i see leaking transmission fluid. my pops said it just ran out of transmission fluid. so is it ok to add transmission fluid? and will it start running?
i need an answer asap! thank you!
 
if it,s out of fluid then it won,t move. you could try filling it but it probably just will leak out again. if it,s leaking that bad then it,s probably the front seal.
 
well...if there is a leak...it needs to be fixed before you start relying on it again...but it wouldn't hurt to see if that fixed the shifting problem
