started but.? It won't go into gear. Is there something the previous owner could have done to make sure the truck would not run or make it difficult to get it running. Its a long story. Any suggestions appreciated.

I doubt if the previous owner did something to it. If he/she had you would not have gotten it started. It is probably some type of linkage problem.

I bought an old car one time, because the guy had rebuilt the engine and could not get it started. I got it for a really good price. It turned out it had an air leak at the manifold I fixed the leak and it ran for years

If it's manual transmission then more than likely the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel as its been standing so long.Sometimes you can break it free by towing it in gear.I assume that it goes into gear before the engine is started.Otherwise you can try drying the plate out by placing a heater under the transmission or you will have to remove the transmission and remove the pressure plate and free the clutch plate.Clean the flywheel and refit same
