Ok, so I recently purchased a 1977 CB550K. Its my first bike, so I'm basically new to all of this. I have a motorcycle mechanic friend of mine who did a tune up on it, new spark plugs, cleaned the carbs, and checked the bike over. He also charged the battery because I left the ignition on and killed the battery when I first got it. The previous owner had just purchased the new battery. Got the bike back and everything was running fine.
After a few rides I started to have problems, the bike acted as if the battery was dead, but I could jump start the bike off the car and it would ride without any problems. I'd then get home, turn it off, try to start it again, and the battery would be dead.
I'd trickle charged the battery and get the bike to start, but it kept dying when I increase the RPMs. Jump start the bike again and it rides just fine.
The next time I can't get it to start again. I charge the battery and try to ride the bike. This time the bike starts, but engine dies when I increase the RPMs again. I cant get it to leave the driveway. Try to jump start the bike off the car, wont start. Cant get the bike to start by popping the clutch going down hill either.
Trickle charged the battery (8hrs) and try it again. The bike will start, but then after 2-3 minutes it dies and wont start aain.
Charged the battery, and put a new voltage regulator and rectifier on the bike. The battery seems to hold a charge a lot better than before, but the engine still dies when I increase RPMs. This is the last time the bike started. I have purchased a new battery, replaced the condensor/capacitor and readjusted the points, purchased new spark plugs, and pulled each individual plug to observe the spark. Only plug 3 looks the have a good spark, 1,2, & 4 look weak (keep in mind im new at this).
Other notes, the tank is in good shape (no rust), and the carb float bowls can be drained and refilled. my next step is to check the ignition coils.
Would appreciate any help.
