1970 HD ironhead changed the primary oil, does the bike have to be straigt

up or can it be on the kick stand? In the clymer book it says 1.5 pints i don't think it doesn't seem like i put a pint in before oil started to come out of the leveler hole. Any help here i just need to know if it need to be standing straight up.
