hi so i have a 1968 ford f250 (automatic) i went to park in my drive way about an hour ago and when i put it in park i just started rolling back ! i got it into reverse and parked it on a level surface but now i cant put it into any gears. the gear shifter just slides around and doesn't catch the gears please does anyone know what the problem might be ?

sounds like your shifter linkage on the tranny has either came lose or is slipping just slip under the truck and look at where the cable comes down to the tranny and make sure it is still in place if it is then put blocks behind the wheels on the truck and try to turn the linkage on the tranny with your hand , if it moves freely it will have to be fixed you will have to drain the fluid and drop the pan and fix it , if you can you might have to take it to the transmission shop good luck

You're lucky the truck is a '68, the linkage is all mechanical with like three tightening points and either a bolt is loose or the shaft coming from inside the transmission knurled end is worn allowing the connecting link to spin on the shaft.

If this is the case replace the knurled shaft orv tighten the heck out of it (connecting part) to prevent slippage.

If it still has the stock linkage, look at the place it fastens to the linkage on the steering column under the hood. The bolt/nut may be loose or moved.
It it is block the tires and get under the truck and place the transmission linkage in neutral. Then (making sure the fastening device on the column is loose) place the gear selector on the column in neutral and re-tighten the fastener.
If this does not work the problem is in the shifter tube. The part that goes to the shifting linkage is broken and needs replaced. If this is the case either get a floor shifter kit or get the repair parts from some place like Dennis Carpenter Ford.
Correcting a floor shifter is much the same. The adjustment is made with the transmission in neutral.
Use caution as the vehicle can roll when in neutral!
