They were robber barons. There were very few governmental controls on them. They were free to form monopolies, drive others out of business, and there was nothing to keep them from egregiously exploiting their workers. J.P. Morgan was so rich, at one point he loaned the government money (gold, actually).
They are an example of capitalism gone wild.
