Most of the children had minor injuries and were treated at the scene, the Norwalk Police Department said in a statement on its Facebook page. Several other children, including two with serious injuries, were sent to hospitals, according to the statement. No one from the Police Department was immediately available for comment, and the precise nature of the injuries was unclear.
Three children were in stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital, said Cindy Nunes, a nursing supervisor there. A spokeswoman for Stamford Hospital said two children were being treated in that hospital’s emergency room, but she would provide no information about their injuries.
In the statement, the police said that a swing ride lost power, “causing the children on the ride to forcefully fall to the ground.”
The accident occurred at the Oyster Festival, an annual event in Norwalk put on by the Norwalk Seaport Association, a local community group.
The association said in a statement that all other rides had been shut down pending an investigation by state inspectors.
“We are cooperating fully with the investigating authorities,” the statement said.
