101 Dalmatians and Disney's "Platinum Editions"

blahh :P

I was looking forward to buying this but I see that Disney, yet again, have released it in 4:3 and not in widescreen. What was the point in making it a "Platinum Edition" release when they don't even release the proper version of the film?

Also, why do they release a film on DVD and then a month or two later withdraw it from sale for a few years? There are a ton of Disney films my little brother loves and I would like to get him them on DVD as he does not have the VHS or hasn't seen them in a long time. By the time they are re-released again on DVD he will probably have grown out of them. Disney haven't got a bloody clue.

Disney go to great lengths to restore their movies for dvd releases and release them in the correct ratio.

101 Dalmatians was not made in widescreen so why would they chop off part of the image just to fill the screen.

Hardly good policy for collectors .

They have always followed the limited release policy with their classic films.

For them it means the initial selling price is largely maintained for the whole time the title is available and sales will give them a speedy return rather than people waiting months until it goes half price.

For the collector it can give you a return on your investment

What Disney titles are you after?

Most have been released although some may be currently deleted.

R1 is your best option for Disney as they treat the collector more like an adult where Disney UK seem to think buyers are all kiRAB.

There are some choice titles where the UK release is a bog standard disc with no extras but the R1 is a 2 disc set with commentaries and documentaries and more.

The R1 of 101 Dalmatians is also 4:3

The videos were NOT readily available.

Disney had exactly the same policy with VHS(with the same films) as they do with dvd.

I think you will find an awful lot of work goes into these restorations but if they are of no interest or the extras then you should have got the original release when it came out a few years ago.

You will find these 2 disc dvd editions with loaRAB of extras and great sound are being sold for the same price as the VHS tapes were more than a decade ago and thats without inflation so compared to the VHS these dvd's are a bargain

Although I was suprised when Jungle Book was in widescreen.

IIRC the only classic Disney's made in full 2.35 :1 were Sleeping Beauty and Lady and the Tramp - and thats how they appeared on the most recent releases.

The original UK dvd of LATT was in 4:3 so 50% of the picture was missing

Disney's first classic Blu-ray comes out later this year - Sleeping Beauty, remastered in HD and presented in it's original widescreen glory!

Incidentally, this doesn't mean the non-widescreen films can't come out on Blu-ray. I'd recommend to anyone that they wait for these versions. I'm sure they'll make a big deal about stuff like Aladdin and The Lion King coming out in this format.

According to IMDB, 101 Dalmatians was made in 1.75:1. The Aristocats was made in 1.33:1, yet it's recent release was in widescreen. Did Disney crop it for release? f so, and 101 Dalmatians was made in 1.33:1, why did they not crop it too?
