I've spent days trying to decide which would be better for me. I want to use either a single 10" or 12" Polk Audio MM series single voice coil sub. The main issue here is available space to put the box and two amps. If I get really creative with 3/4" MDF and Polyfill I could barely squeeze the 12" behind the back seat. I thought about putting the amps in a different spot but honestly the best solution is to build a separate compartment on to the sub box and mount the amps inside it with fans for airflow and rubber to absorb vibrations. Afterall this is going in a Wrangler, with the top down they could get rained on and with a soft top and plastic windows there really isn't anything stopping someone from stealing an amp in plain sight. Mainly I listen to rock with a touch of hip-hop and techno type music. I know a 10" would be great for most rock but I'm worried that it just won't be enough for the heavy/grunge type rock and pounding beats of hip-hop/techno. I am pretty much dead-set on one of these Polk subs because the other speakers in the Wrangler are a set of Polk Audio 6 1/2" and 5 1/4" component speakers run on a Polk 4-channel amp. All of these Polk speakers are marine-rated which is great for a Jeep, plus the box will be sprayed with truck bed liner so it will be waterproofed as well. My other concern is that with the extremely limited space, the sub will be facing the back of the rear seat with only an inch or two of space between the subs grille and the fabric of the seat. The seat is just a few inches thick made of foam and wire support frame.. will that be enough to greatly reduce the bass transmitted to the front passengers? Most of the time the back seat isn't in the vehicle so it wouldn't matter, but whenever I've got friends along it has to be in and with friends riding along its the best time to crank the music!
Oh and I was also just a bit concerned that a 10" sub wouldn't be a huge difference from the two 6 1/2" woofers in the rear component set. But I haven't been around more than a couple vehicles with subs in my life so by all means call me an idiot if the difference is like night and day between those sizes!
