the ' frontier ' was the term used to refer to the extent of white settlement in the United States . Thats why when you watch ' Dances with Wolves ' John Dunbar ( Kevin Costner ) is a Civil War hero from the Union and gets any posting he wants as a reward after the war. He asks that he get a posting at the frontier and says he wants to go there before it is all gone. At the frontier he ventures into Sioux Indian territory and befriends them somehow even though he is a white and the enemy of the indians. The frontier was where the buffalo roamed before the white hunters wiped them all out. Yes at the frontier there were many mines as there were inland in settled territory. Around a hundred and thirty years ago the frontier extented to Nebraska and in a northern and southern direction within another 20 years there was no more frontier - the last Indian to resist whites was Geronimo the Apache who had the excellent attack helicopter named as a tribute to the ferocity of the Apaches

Wounded Knee was not a battle - it was a slaughter as the Indians were unarmed - starving - diseased and mostly women and children - it was a butcher and murder but on your test yes it will be referred to as a battle and you will get your point for referring it as a battle
