[h=3]Associated Press[/h]NEW YORK — One person has died and eight people were injured in a fire that gutted the inside of a five-story apartment building in lower Manhattan.
Fire officials say about 200 firefighters responded to the five-alarm blaze on Spring Street in Soho just after 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The fire was declared under control about three hours later.
Chief of Fire Operations James Esposito said the fire started on the second floor and quickly spread through the upper floors and to the roof. He said firefighters were able to the keep the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.
Two civilians and seven firefighters suffered minor injuries. The unidentified person who died was found on the upper floors.
No word on the cause of the fire.
