09' SG - Surprising Oil Leak

Was cleaning bikes this weekend and when I moved my 09' street glide noticed a half dollar size spot on the floor of the garage (had been sitting for about a week). Move the bike back to where it was and look under the bike; the front half of the oil pan was "wet" with engin oil from the bottom of the pan up to the gasket where the oil pan attaches to the motor.

I was surprised, because I did not think that particular gasket was one that failed very often. Only 5K miles on the bike. Anybody else have this issue or any thoughts?

Check out the two hex bolts on the right side of the bike that hold the header pipe from the front jug to your tranny.

These two bolts are notorious for loosening up and they spew tranny oil all over the pan making it look like engine oil.

Mine were backed out (both of them) a full 1/16th of an inch. They looked as if they were never tightened from the factory but that wasnt the case.

They back themselves out in time......mine loosened up at 8 K. If their loose...tranny oil will come out. Check those.

Good point...also, if you did a recent oil change, there could be residual waste runnning down from the filter & maybe loose filter. Check Gliden's post 1st & go from there...oil runs can sometimes be tricky devil's.

Good call Gliden, just got home from being out of state, can home and check the bolts and that's exacly what it was. However my bolt(s) were not loose, but one of them was all the way out and gone.

Have not checked the fluid level yet, but hopefull there is still some in there and I didn't f-up a tranny. Must have happened on my last ride which was only a 60 mile round trip, no other drips in the garage and I didn't notice any tranny noise or poor shifting. Will all the tranny fluid dump through those bolt holes?

Thanks for the help

Had to apply locktite and retorque mine about 8K ago. I find myself now always checking the area around the bolts for leaks before and during rides. Nothing, so far.

Tough area to take a pic, but I'll try tomorrow, but they are basically the two bolts that hold the exhaust bracket to the tranny case. I'm assuming this is true for a stock or aftermarket exhaust. I have Freedom Performance - Sharp Curve Radius exhaust and they hold that exhaust bracket to the tranny case.

Seems like a pour design for those bolts to go all the way throught the tranny case, don't see the sence of it.

Same thing for me. I thought I had an oil leak, brought it to the dealer under warranty. Fixed it no problem, 3 months later no problems.
