09 RKC: Drop it Into First Gear, Trans. Whines, Even With Clutch Still In. Why?

09 RKC with 3K miles.

Pull in the clutch to coast to a red light, drop it into first, transmission whines like a banshee.

Anyone else experience this annoyance?

Thanks

Par for the course. Straight cut gears in first and fifth. Don't sweat it.

UPDATE ... Missed about the clutch being in!!! Maybe adjust the clutch??? Mine whines but not with the clutch in!!!

First gear on the '09 is straight cut so it will wine, thats normal. Pulling clutch lever disengages tranny from engine, not from rear wheel so wheel is driving tranny as you coast up to the light. Go with a good gear oil like Redline Shockproof and a lot, not all, of that wine will go away.

You will also notice that if you wait until your speed has dropped below about 15 mph to complete your downshift into 1st that you will have very little whine... As stated earlier, the rear wheel is still driving the trans and depending how fast you are going you can really be spinning the gears in the box ....

yea, mine does it too. freaked me out the first time i heard it. reminded me more of a Big Truck than a motorcycle. I try to keep it under 5 mph if i have to shift Down into 1st. that way, i don't hear it.

I wouldn't shift into first gear until you are at the last 10 ft of coasting to a stop..
Same with my truck. It's a given not to drop to first gear at anything faster than a creep.

Also, just before shifting into 1st I pull in the clutch and wait for a 3 count and shift into 1st. No clunk at all. As far as the whine, I kinda like the sound my bike makes as I'm rolling to a stop in 1st.
