It only has 24,000miles on it. I bought it used about 2wks ago, and it has a warranty for 3,000miles & another through Mazda as well. It is an automatic, 4 cylinder. No problems yet. BUT when the car is ON & in "park"you can clearly hear the engine revving up & dying down over & over. Is this normal? The RPMs do go up a tiny bit but always stay under "1". Should i have them take a look at the car before the warranty is out? I am a girl that doesnt know a ton about cars, so help is appreciated. Thanks.
no air conditioning was on once, but not other times. It always acts this way... already thought of that one

Is the air conditioner on when it's doing this? If so it's normal for the engine to rev up slightly when the compressor engages and then back down when it disengages. If not, you should probably get it in before the warranty is out. Better safe than sorry.

Well I don't think your car is literally "shifting" as in shifting gears. Do you have the AC on? what you're seeing sounds pretty normal. you'll get some minor jumps in rpm's when you idle in hot weather and the fan kicks on and off and such. The car isn't jerking or anything is it?
