'07 Idle Issues

OK guys, this AM we got on the bike and it would not run again as I stated in my above post. Start and die, no idle. I was ready to keep heading to FL (home) and half mile down the road, a Harley dealer, Worth HD of Kansas City was open today, Monday Aug 30. So I pulled in and guess what? The guy starts it to pull it into the shop and it runs like it should. So I tell them all the details of all the symptoms and they hook it to the computer or whatever it is and it is all just fine. Then they say probably a fuel filter. So I tell them about the TT410. The mechanic prints it off and reads it and says, well your bike is in the right parameters, lets check the fuel filter. So he pulls it off, it seems ok but maybe some restriction, and I say okay change it. They change it, I walk out to start it with my wife on back and it acts up, starts and dies. I tell her, run in and get the mechanic, I am afraid to get off it or it will start right up.......lol....he comes out and sure enough it won't idle for him. He gets it on the computer and guess what? It needs that Idle Motor. After I had paid them 158 bucks for the fuel filter!!!! Now they change that idle motor and it was 106 bucks. So far I have spent 158 bucks in Rapid City, SD at the Harley Dealer and 208 bucks at Worth HD so 366 bucks total, and now it runs.

I have extended warranty and so at Worth it was only a 50 savings because the fuel filter is not warranty item. Well I will write it all up to send to HD warranty when I get home. Now I am in a hotel in St. Louis writing this and the bike ran good to here. Still seems to pop some on deceleration but now I have a lot (LOT) more power as it was sluggish up hills before, now it runs much better. Tomorrow all day riding will be the test.

Whoever said it was their idle motor in an earlier post was right on and I told them about your post before they fixed mine. :

Thanks guys, will update you tomorrow. I almost traded it in but knew I was too frustrated with it and I saw a lot of brand new bikes in the shop.

Congrat's on getting it figured out! Hopefully it'll be a great bike for you now.
I can't believe you didn't leave it on the side of the road somewhere. That's a whole lot of crap you put up with for something that should have been enjoyable.

I was the guy who said he replaced his idle control motor. I had similar symptoms for about 6 months but it was more intermittent than your bike. I first tried replacing the temp sensor without any improvement. I talked to a number of mechanics, both HD and non-HD and got a lot of confused looks. Then one day I'm complaining to the service counter guy at Seminole HD in Sanford. One of his mechanics happened to be there and he said it sounds like a bad idle control motor. He walked outside to the bike and had me cycle the ignition off/on a few times. He said the sound it made (ie noisy gears engaging) was a tipoff that it was a problem with the motor. The part cost $45 and another $95 for installation. That was a month ago and I haven't had the problem since. The funny part is the bike seems to run better overall. I don't know why that is but I'll take it. The morrow to the story is you need to find a good mechanic. I talked with other mechanics at the same HD dealer previously and they didn't even mention the IAC motor.

Just another update. After the ECM reflash, more than 3k miles, no more idle problems. Before the reflash, anytime I was traveling at highway speed and approaching a stop, the idle would drop almost to the point of stalling. I cleaned the IAC valve, replaced the TPS and set the TPS voltage to spec and it still screwed up.

In a hotel in Murfreesboro, TN tonight. Hope you all don't mind traveling with me but I figure that after I just paid 17k for this Ultra w/13k miles and chromed out to the max, I better try to help others if they need input on this problem. iClick thanks a lot.

It ran great all day on the interatates from KC to here in TN, HOWEVER----at one gas stop after I filled up, I turned it on, hit the start button after the engine light went out, and NADA. It was like the starter was not hooked up or the start button went out. No noise, no nothing. Everything else worked fine, horn, lights, radio. So tried the switch on and off several times and noting. Finally I put it in 6th gear and rolled it forward with my wife pushing and not fast enough to start it, then I pushed it in gear forward and backward and hit the start button and it started up. It started the rest of the day no problems. Tomorrow is another day. I am ready to sell it. It comes with a HD warranty with four more years to go on that expensive warranty that includes tires and such but I also have an 01 Road King I love but it needs a new tranny. No big deal there but I am tired of a fuel injected bike already.

Oh, BTW the mechanic that fixed the bike said I have the stage one download with the program that cuts out the rear cylinder and he accidentally ran that program again and overwrote the old one and it did not change anything. He said that parts department will automatically see it was done and he will explain it to them, he said had it been something else then it would be charged to me or try to charge me, as he said it has a direct link to Harley(?????) He said otherwise he would just take out the program that sets up the bike for that parade mode, rear cylinder cut off as he said they have had some problems with that program. stay tuned, if I am to gabby let me know and I will shut up. But when I get home I will be quiet as I will clean it and up spotless and run an ad to sell it. I will have to post some pics of both bikes when I figure out how.

I also want to thank Marty442 for his post on the idle motor.
