I've heard it to be pretty common. I've had 3 different mopar type vehicles, and all of them do it. Is just a solenoid engaging the gear, and nothing to worry about.
sound. What could this be? The dealer said it was the electronic transmission engaging. There is no hesitation in the gear being engaged but there's that weird electronic grinding type sound. Not a metal on metal though. The deal also said that you hear this on a lot of Toyota's but I've never hear it before.
This would have nothing to do with a transfer case leaking or differential? Both of those a leaking slightly. The differential is in the passenger back.
