i just pulled the air filter today on my recon i noticed that it has oil on the air filter i know its not a good sign but im wondering if this has a high chance of having to replace the rings and piston, or if its probably just the carb needs a good cleaning?

I haven't worked on a Recon lately, but, doesn't that model come stock from the factory with a foam type air filter that IS supposed to be oiled ? On the other hand if its really excessive, I mean like a puddle of oil in the bottom of the air box then I might question it. The first question would be did you or anyone else over fill the engine oil, or has the machine recently been tipped over for an extended period of time. If its the foam type just wash it out with alot of dish soap, rinse it, dry it, re-oil, and reinstall it. Then check it more frequently to see if there is a problem. Foam air filter oil in a spray can is available at most bike shops.
