so check engine light came on. ammco says my code read EGR. They said a smoke test will identify the problem. r they lying to me? What step do i need to take next? and is EGR really important, will it damage my engine if i continue to drive with it like this?

Problem is probably the DPFE sensor, though egr valve that doesn't work, won't hurt engine, most it might do is cause a valve noise on a engine load

you need to get it fixed a bad egr valve couse build up of carbon and will clogge your catalytic converter

The EGR valve returns exhaust gas back to the combustion chambers for full burning of gasoline fumes. this should not give you anyother problems in the long run other than having that annoying light on and your car will probably waste more gas. and no they are not trying to rip you off

First and foremost, a faulty EGR valve will cause an increase in NOX emissions. It can also significantly lower your fuel economy and may even cause the engine to ping.
