'01 Honda Civic transmission problems?

I'm looking into buying a used '01 Honda Civic. It looks pretty good and they're selling it at a good price. The only problem is that the second gear doesn't work very well. The seller says that it has taken it to a couple mechanics and a Honda dealer and they've told him that as long as you know how to drive a stick you can live without a second gear. I'm still taking it to a mechanic, but what would you say?
Is that true? Can you live without a second gear?
