    when I put an HDMI cable into my monitor the screen is condensed. why?

    Previously I had a dvi cable connected from my home-made computer which was set to 1920 x 1080 resolution, and I switched it to HDMI, and now the screen is condensed and there is black lines down all 4 sides of my monitor (its still at 1920 x 1080). can anyone please help me?
