    Why is my gerbil's eye red-rimmed?

    My gerbil normally has black-brown eyes, but this morning when I came downstairs his left eye had a sore-looking red rim around it. It's only on the left one and it's not mucus, it looks dry and flaky. Could it be an infection? Should I take him to the vet?
