    Why do people say "Excuse the pun"?

    It's said that jokes worth telling don't need explaining. In that case, why do some bother to write "excuse the pun"? I see it written quite often and can't see the point of it. There's no offence so why should it need excusing? It's an unnecessary comment and destroys any subtlety of the pun...

    Downloadable English dictionary and thesaurus application for Windows?

    I want to download a dictionary/thesaurus which can be used offline. I'm on Windows XP on an Eee PC 901 netbook. It needs to be lightweight software. Previous to installing XP I had Linux which came with a dictionary. I would like a similar one to that where as I type the words come up.
